In February 2019 a new sprig called Cedars took root in Stellenbosch. The groundwork had started long ago, when God began to stir an eldership couple in 3Ci, Pretoria, to plant a church in the Winelands of the Western Cape. After four years of promise and preparation, Adrian and Antoinette Quinlivan felt released to go, with 3Ci’s extravagant blessing at their backs. A team of 25 men and women chose to uproot and join them in the adventure.
Ezekiel 17 has an incredible promise where God declares an arbor day over His people:
"'This is what the Sovereign Lord says:
I myself will take a shoot from the very top of a cedar and plant it; I will break off a tender sprig from its topmost shoots and plant it on a high and lofty mountain. On the mountain heights of Israel I will plant it; it will produce branches and bear fruit and become a splendid cedar. Birds of every kind will nest in it; they will find shelter in the shade of its branches. All the trees of the forest will know that I the Lord bring down the tall tree and make the low tree grow tall. I dry up the green tree and make the dry tree flourish."
'I the Lord have spoken, and I will do it.’"
This scripture was given as a promise over Cedars and will define and shape the values of this church:
Resting in His work, and not our own, Cedars exists so that Jesus can be known and fully enjoyed in Stellenbosch and beyond. With the gospel as the great leveller, we aim to be a diverse community of believers who stand on equal footing, irrespective of culture or background. Cedars is committed to an authentic journey with Jesus, where lines blur between friends and family. Passionate about the cross, we’re convinced that the Great Commission is still great and the highest of privileges.
